J-Springs

J-Springs Farm began in 1965 when John and Judy Springstrow started milking a small herd of cows on a farm near Black Creek. Though John passed away in 1980, Judy continued to operate their family farm with the help of their three children.

Today, Judy and her daughter Amber run the operation together with help from Judy’s other daughter Tami and her husband Jay. Amber returned to the family farm after earning a college degree and working in the city of Milwaukee for a few years. Sadly, John and Judy’s son passed away five years ago due to the same genetic heart problem that John suffered from.

A resilient sense of family and faith has supported the Springstrow’s commitment to living as stewards of the land and the cattle.

“This is our legacy – this is what we do,” Amber said.

At J-Springs, Judy and Amber say “ We prefer to see cows on pasture as long as possible,” and they find great enjoyment in seeing their cattle grazing on grass.

Being a part of something local and family-oriented are the reasons why Judy Springstrow has been an Alto Dairy Cooperative member for 40 years. “I like knowing that our cows’ milk makes this cheese,” Judy said. She also added that Alto cheese is what any neighbor, school tour or visitor who comes to their farm receives before they leave.
